What to do if an eruption happens
Evacuation plan:
*If there is an eruption or suspicion of eruption, sirens will sound to warn you.
*Listen to the radio/television to see whether you need to remain indoors or outdoors
*Police officers and Firemen will be there to help you get to safety
*Try and find a shelter to stay in to avoid the ash and rockfall
Reminders:
*Make sure you and your family have an emergency plan ready and practiced in case of an eruption
*Make sure you have an emergency kit ready at all times
*Take only the most essential items with you
*Disconnect all appliances and turn off electricity and water (if possible)
*Wear long sleeved shirts and pants to protect yourself during ashfall
*Use goggles to protect your eyes during ashfall
*If you are driving do not turn on the air conditioning. It will bring in ash.
*Ash can be very harmful to your health. Use a N-95 disposable respirator ("air purifying respirator") which can be found at hardware stores. If you do not have a N-95 respirator you can use a dust mask. If you do not have either, just use a piece of cloth, or something to prevent the ash from getting into your system.
